Not sure if your ID will work for notarization? Learn which forms of identification are commonly accepted in Illinois.

One of the most common reasons appointments get delayed is invalid identification.

Accepted Forms of ID

In most cases, a notary can accept:

  • Driver’s license

  • State ID card

  • Passport

  • Military ID

The identification should generally:

  • Be government-issued

  • Include a photo

  • Contain a signature

  • Be current or recently issued

What About Expired IDs?

Expired IDs are one of the biggest causes of failed notarizations. Many notaries cannot proceed if identification is outdated.

Can Someone Else Verify Your Identity?

In some situations, credible witnesses may help verify identity if acceptable ID is unavailable. However, rules vary depending on the document and situation.

Pro Tip

Before booking your appointment:

  • Double-check expiration dates

  • Ensure the name matches the document

  • Bring backup ID if possible
